British Dental Association Good Practice Member since 2012
We are pleased to announce that we have successfully renewed our BDA (British Dental Association) Good Practice scheme membership for the sixth year running. This means that our practice is committed to keeping up to date with, and providing quality dental care to nationally agreed standards of good practice in order to provide the best care for you- our patients.
We are proud to say we are the only BDA Good Practice Award holders in Port Talbot, one of only 7 practices in West Glamorgan.
Aberavon RFC have teamed up with local dentist practice and club sponsor, Talbot Road Dental Practice, to ensure children's teeth are protected whilst playing rugby.
The Wizards have been running a competitive rugby programme in both primary and secondary schools for over six years. With the ever increasing need of the use of protective equipment in the game of rugby, Aberavon RFC and Talbot Road Dentist highlight the need to protect your teeth by wearing a gum shield.
Janette from Talbot Road Dentist said, "At Talbot Road Dental Practice we are delighted to be involved again with the Wizards in this community project encouraging players of all ages to wear a custom-made sports mouthguard. This session follows feedback from our work with the Aberavon RFC Schools programme last Summer, where we focused on mouthguard design and first aid for knocked out teeth".
There will be a gum shield impression session at Aberavon RFC on Monday 23 January from 3.30pm until 7pm. At this session, children and adults, will be able to receive a custom fitted gum shield for just £40 (one colour).
Chris Davies, Commercial Manager at Aberavon RFC said, "The priority of the session is to build awareness of the importance to protect your teeth with a gum shield whilst playing rugby, especially for young children just starting to play the game.
Looking after your teeth day to day is very important. Looking after your teeth whilst playing a contact sport like rugby is as important and must not be taken for granted.
"Our team will be on hand to take an accurate impression of players mouths. When you consider the cost of dental work and the risk of losing teeth, it's a small price to pay", added Janette from Talbot Road Dentist.
If you require anymore information on the mouthguard impression session at Aberavon RFC on Monday 23 January, please contact us on 01639 882280.
We have been working with Aberavon Wizards to get children in the community learning about the importance of oral health from an early age. The Wizards came to us concerned about the number of sugary drinks the children bring along to training.
Practice hygienist Viv, and dental nurse Angela have visited 18 schools in the county, more than 500 children in the last few weeks of term. During the visits they taught pupils about healthy drinks for their teeth and the importance of wearing mouthguards. They also taught them some first aid for their teeth in case of sports injuries.
The children also took part in a mouthguard design competition. The winning design from each school was posted on our Facebook page and the public then had their chance to vote for their winning design.
We had a fantastic response to our initiative so far.
We invited each winner to the practice for a prize presentation on August 25th at 3pm, with a goody bag from the Wizards and ourselves. We were delighted to have ex Wales Rugby International Arwel Thomas and Welsh Rugby Union dentist Chris Lewis to present the winners with their goody bags.
Thanks again to all who took part.

Talbot Road Dental Practice is going blue to raise awareness of Mouth Cancer. See us with our blue lips, and hair!, on our Facebook Page and www.facebook.com/Denplan/ where we were awarded BlueLipSelfie of the day!
The practice team have recently completed training on Mouth Cancer Awareness. They also have information boards and leaflets in the waiting rooms and welcome questions from their patients, and the local community, regarding life-threatening mouth cancer. Mouth Cancer does not have the public awareness of other forms of cancer yet, shockingly, it claims more lives every year than testicular and cervical cancer combined. We need to change this. Through our initiative we want to spread awareness of mouth cancer, its causes, the signs and symptoms and the role your dentist can play in helping to catch the disease early enough to beat it.
We are proud to announce our partnership with Aberavon RFC.
