Climate Emergency

The Welsh Government declared a Climate Emergency in 2019, and has committed to achieving a carbon neutral public sector by 2030. As a dental practice, along with our professional body, The British Dental Association, we support this declaration.

Our practice is delighted to be signed up to the Greener Primary Care Wales Framework and Award Scheme and we are actively taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint. The climate emergency is also a health emergency. We therefore aim to enhance the health of our practice population and offer sustainable choices in how we operate and the services we offer to our patients. This will provide benefits to the NHS, your health and the carbon footprint of healthcare.

Thank you

Short notice cancellations and missed appointments are a problem in healthcare. This means wasted time for the clinician, and other patients who could be seen.

We are so grateful to our patients who attend their appointments regularly, and let us know in plenty of time if they can't make it. This helps the smooth running of the Practice for everyone.

Basic Life Support Training

Thank you to Mark, on behalf of HEIW, for our Annual CPR and Medical Emergencies Training yesterday morning. The session included practical resuscitation using resus Annie for adults and children.
We would encourage everyone to learn CPR. Free online interactive training is available for everyone https://www.resus.org.uk/public-resource/how-we-save-lives/lifesaver-learning/lifesaver

World Parkinsons Day

Today is World Parkinsons Day.

We are lucky to have a brilliant Parkinsons support group in our area. https://localsupport.parkinsons.org.uk/activity/port-talbot-cafe

They offer information, friendship and support to local people with Parkinson's, their families and carers. Call Tony or email for further information.

We also have information in the Practice regarding mouth care.https://www.parkinsons.org.uk/information-and-support/mouth-and-dental-issues

Bronze Award for Talbot Road Dental Practice!

Talbot Road Dental Practice has been awarded a Bronze Award for 2022 by the Greener Primary Care Wales Framework and Award Scheme.

What does this mean?

Climate change affects us all and can have negative impacts on individual and population health. We all need to do our part to mitigate climate change, including primary care practices. In 2018/19 the carbon footprint of NHS Wales was approximately 1 million tonnes of CO2e, 2.6% of Wales’s total greenhouse gas emissions, the highest in the public sector.

The Greener Primary Care Wales Framework and Award Scheme from Public Health Wales has been designed to help independent primary care contractors (community optometry, general practice, community pharmacy and primary care dental practices) to improve the environmental sustainability of their day-to-day practice.

That is why we, as a practice, have taken part in the framework for 2022. As part of the framework, we completed the following actions:

  • · Talked to the team about reducing our energy consumption in the Practice eg. Running full loads in the sterilizers, switching off appliances when they are not in use

  • · Introduced our patients to the availability of environmentally friendly oral health products, and provide samples where we can

We’re delighted to have received a Bronze Award and are committed to reducing our impact on the environment.

Merry Christmas!

All of us at Talbot Road Dental Practice would like to wish our patients a very Merry Christmas! Thank you for all the biscuits, chocolates and wine! We are so lucky to have such lovely patients.

As ever, please stay away from crackling, nut brittle, chocolate straight from the fridge and opening bottles with your teeth! Seriously...don't do it!!!
